Castles and historic buildings in North Yorkshire 

North Yorkshire has a rich historical heritage spanning, the roman, Anglo-Viking, and Norman eras right up to the present day. Many of towns such as York, Knaresborough and Harrogate are built on or around what remains of this heritage.

Spofforth Castle 

Come and see the ruined hall and chamber of this medieval Manor House (photo). Originally owned by the powerful Percy Family, before its destruction. The house was then rebuilt in the 15th century, using the original foundations which were cut out the of the rocks.

Byland Abbey 

Come and see the remains of a Cistercian monastery. Located between Thirsk and Helmsley, thees ruins are a great place to explore and learn about Gothic Architecture, as well as the local history.  Much of the abbey still remains, including decorated tiled floors and the monastic buildings.

Aldborough Roman Town 

This is a must for anyone interested in Roman history.  Located beneath the village of Aldborough, the Roman town of Isurium Brigantum, was once the administrative capital of the Brigantes- the largest tribal confederation in Britain. 

The remains of its defences are still visible along with two mosaics, evidence of the town's prosperity. The site museum has an impressive display of archeological findings, tracing back three centuries.

St Mary's Church, Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey 

Part of the Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey complex, this stunning High Victorian Anglican Church was designed in 1870s by the flamboyant architect William Burges. The decorative interior has remained unaltered through the centuries.

York Cold War Bunker 

A chilling reminder of recent history. This bunker was designed to house 60 men and women in the event of Armageddon. If you are fan of Fallout, then this might be of interest to you. 

Visits are by guided tour, with a 10min film (rated PG) telling the story of the Cold War.

Clifford's Tower 

The largest remaining building of York Castle, Northen England's greatest medieval royal fortress. 

Commissioned in 1244 by King Henry III. The tower was symbol of royal power in the North of England until a fire in 1684. Now newly renovated, visitors can explore and learn about four key points in its history.
